Uggs aren’t the toughest boots. How do you care for your Uggs?

Uggs are notoriously soft boots. That of course is why they are so popular and so comfortable. They are the most comfortable boot you can wear.

And if you buy retail (don’t) then you can pay anywhere up to $999 a pair. So you don’t want to find that they fall apart quickly.

So how do you take care of your Uggs?

Well the first thing to understand is that Uggs boots are not tough boots. As far as footwear goes Uggs are very soft wearing boots prone to damage. If you buy a pair with a second outer leather skin they may well wear better, but even so Ugg boots are soft and prone to damage.

Ugh boots are also not waterproof. It is possible to buy waterproofing products to use to treat your Uggs, but don’t expect to tramp through rain and snow and keep your feet dry. They will leak, waterproofer or not.

So use your common sense and recognise the limitations of your sheepskin boots. They are boots made from sheepskin and that doesn’t make for a tough hard wearing stain resistant waterproof boot like you get if you buy, say a full leather walking boot.

Uggs are for looking good and for keeping your feet warm when it’s dry. They are a fashion boot that is best worn when they are going to be seen by the people you want to see them. They are not made for rain, snow, slush or mud. If it’s rainging take your hiking boots out. Put your Uggs in the car if you really want to wear them, and wear them indoors.

If your Uggs do get wet sponge them down with a soft sponge and some cold water. Don’t scrub too hard, don’t dry them right in front of the heater or in the direct sun. Don’t brush them except softly. When you  brush to take off mud, for example, look to see the grain of the skin and brush with grain.Our best advice? Use your common sense, recognize that your Uggs boots are a fashion item that needs to be treated with extreme care, and don’t take them when you’re likely to get them wet or dirty.

And if you absolutely must wear your Ugg boots out on a nasty day buy a second pair of cheap or discount Uggs boots and wear them out so you don’t ruin your best Uggs.
